Monthly Energy Review

The Monthly Energy Review is EIA's comprehensive report on recent integrated energy statistics. Preliminary data indicate that, in March 2018, total carbon dioxide emissions from U.S. consumption of energy (excluding biomass) equaled 444 million metric tons. Of this total, petroleum accounted for 46%, natural gas for 34%, and coal for 20%.

Electric Power Monthly

Data in the June 2018 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for April 2018, during which net generation in the United States rose 2.9 percent from the April 2017 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 13.1 percent compared to April 2017. The average residential retail price of electricity for April 2018 was up 1.6 percent from what it had been in April 2017.

Refinery Capacity Report

Data series include fuel, electricity, and steam purchased for consumption at the refinery; refinery receipts of crude oil by method of transportation; current and projected capacities for atmospheric crude oil distillation, downstream charge, production, and storage capacities. Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.

State Energy Profiles: New monthly data for March and April 2018, new annual data, and updated Profile Analyses and Quick Facts

New monthly data are available for electricity, petroleum, natural gas, and coal. New annual data are available for energy consumption and expenditures, home heating by fuel type, and ethanol plant operating capacity, as well as series covering the U.S. territories. In addition, Profile Analyses and Quick Facts have been updated for Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

The latest Prime Supplier Report presents data through April 2018 on Form EIA-782C, "Monthly Report of Prime Supplier Sales of Petroleum Products Sold for Local Consumption." These data measure primary petroleum product deliveries into the states where they are locally marketed and consumed.

Drilling Productivity Report

The Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $77 per barrel (b) in May, an increase of $5/b from the April level and the highest monthly average price since November 2014. EIA forecasts Brent spot prices will average $71/b in 2018 and $68/b in 2019. The 2019 forecast price is $2/b higher than in the May STEO. EIA expects West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices will average almost $7/b lower than Brent prices in 2018 and $6/b lower than Brent prices in 2019. NYMEX WTI futures and options contract values for September 2018 delivery traded during the five-day period ending June 7, 2018, suggest a range of $52/b to $81/b encompasses the market expectation for September WTI prices at the 95% confidence level.

Petroleum Marketing Monthly

The June 2018 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through March 2018, presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined products sales in the United States. In this issue of the PMM, preliminary March 2018 data show crude oil prices decreased from February 2018 levels, while prices for the major finished petroleum products show mixed trends. U.S.–level Prime Supplier data show gasoline and distillate fuels sales rose month-on-month; additionally, many of the surveyed products also show year-on-year increases.

The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

2015 RECS: Consumption and expenditures data now available, including estimates for more than 20 new end uses

Estimates of household energy consumption and expenditures from the 2015 RECS are now available. Featured in this release are estimates of consumption and costs for more than 20 energy end uses not available in previous rounds of RECS. EIA also revised the housing characteristics data from the 2015 RECS.

Natural Gas Monthly

In March 2018, for the tenth consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in March 2018 was 2,467 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 79.6 Bcf/day. This level was 8.0 Bcf/day (11.2%) higher than the March 2017 level of 71.6 Bcf/day. The average daily rate of dry natural gas production for March was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1973.

Autonomous Vehicles: Uncertainties and Energy Implications

The potential effect autonomous vehicles may have on the future of personal mobility and freight movement has received considerable attention in recent years. This attention has focused not only on discussion of real and perceived costs of travel, shared-use mobility, travel patterns, vehicle design, and vehicle ownership, but also on how autonomous vehicles may affect energy markets. This article uses modeling results from scenarios related to the Annual Energy Outlook 2018 to help quantify the potential effects on energy of widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles.

The share of electric and hybrid vehicle sales in the United States increased in the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24) after a slight decline in 1Q24. Combined U.S. sales of hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased from 17.8% of total new light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales in 1Q24 to 18.7% in 2Q24, according to estimates from Wards Intelligence.
