Monthly Energy Review

Sep 26, 2023
The Monthly Energy Review (MER) is our comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. Beginning with the September 2023 MER, we have updated the way we calculate primary energy consumption of electricity generation from noncombustible renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal). We will now calculate consumption of noncombustible renewable energy for electricity generation using the captured energy approach, which applies a constant conversion factor of 3,412 British thermal units per kilowatthour (Btu/kWh), the heat content of electricity. This approach is a change from our current methodology, called the fossil fuel equivalency approach. The captured energy approach is more consistent with international energy statistics standards than the fossil fuel equivalency approach. See Changes to the Monthly Energy Review and MER Appendix E for more information.

Commercial electricity demand grew fastest in states with rapid computing facility growth ›

Consumption of electricity in the U.S. commercial sector has recovered from pandemic levels, with annual U.S. sales of electricity to commercial customers in 2023 totaling 14 billion kilowatthours (BkWh), or 1%, more than in 2019. However, the growth in commercial demand for electricity is concentrated in a handful of states experiencing rapid development of large-scale computing facilities such as data centers. Electricity demand has grown the most in Virginia, which added 14 BkWh, and Texas, which added 13 BkWh. Based on our expectation that regional electricity demand will grow, we revised our forecasts upward for commercial electricity demand through 2025 in our June Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). More
