Data in the October 2022 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for August 2022, during which net generation in the United States rose 0.1 percent from the August 2021 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 9.1 percent compared to August 2021. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 14.3 percent from the August 2021 level.

Annual Coal Distribution Report 2021

The Annual Coal Distribution Report (ACDR) provides detailed information on U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for 2021 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. In addition, the report summarizes foreign coal distribution by coal-producing state. All data for 2021 are final, and this report supersedes the data published in the four Quarterly Coal Distribution Reports previously issued for 2021.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

In our Winter Fuels Outlook, we forecast that average household expenditures for home heating fuels will increase this winter because of both higher expected fuel costs and higher energy consumption due to colder temperatures. Compared with last winter, in nominal terms, we forecast expenditures for homes that heat with natural gas will rise by 28%, heating oil by 27%, electricity by 10%, and propane 5% from October–March.

Working natural gas stocks post second-largest weekly net increase on record

Net injections into working natural gas storage totaled 129 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending September 30, 2022, 48% more than the five-year average (2017–21) for the week of 87 Bcf. Working gas reached 3,106 Bcf, as of last Friday, exceeding the 3,000 Bcf mark for the first time since last January—about four weeks later than normal. This week’s report marks the second-largest weekly net increase in the history of the Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR) dating back to 1993. The largest weekly net increase was 132 Bcf, for the week ending May 29, 2015.

2021 Annual State Historical Spreadsheets

This site contains annual historical spreadsheets with electricity sales, revenue, customers and price data from ultimate customers from the 2021 Form EIA-861. The files contain state-level and U.S. total-level data for electricity sales, revenue, and customer and price, by sector. The data covers the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Files were reformatted this year into one spreadsheet, down from four spreadsheets. New data was added from 1960-1989. The series was also broken into 3 time periods; 1960-1989, 1990-2009 and 2010-present.

The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for second-quarter 2022 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.

U.S. coal production during the second quarter of 2022 totaled 145.7 million short tons (MMst), which was 2.2% lower than the previous quarter and 2.1% higher than the second quarter of 2021. Second-quarter 2022 U.S. coal exports (23 MMst) increased 13.9% from the first-quarter 2022 level and increased 4.5% from the second-quarter 2021 level. U.S. coal imports in the second quarter of 2022 totaled 1.6 MMst. All data for 2021 and previous years are final. All data for 2022 are preliminary.

Petroleum Marketing Monthly

  • The October 2022 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through July 2022 presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined petroleum products sales in the United States.
  • July 2022 crude oil sales data are available in tables 1, 1A, and 18-27. However, due to systems issues, publication of refined petroleum products sales data continue to be delayed. We are working to restore our systems as soon as possible.

Natural Gas Monthly

This issue contains extensive revisions to data for 2020, 2021, and year-to-date 2022 because of benchmarking to annual data published in the Natural Gas Annual 2021 (NGA). These revisions primarily apply to statistics on production, underground storage, consumption, and prices by sector. A detailed description of the revisions and benchmarking process is in Appendix C of the Natural Gas Monthly (NGM).

U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for July 2022. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

The 2021 Natural Gas Annual shows U.S. dry natural gas production increased year over year in 2021, after declining year over year in 2020. Dry natural gas production was the highest for any year on record, dating back to 1930. Natural gas consumption also increased year over year in 2021.
