U.S. Oil and Natural Gas Wells by Production Rate

Dec 19, 2024
Our Well Distribution Report presents historical, annual state-level data on well distribution by size and technology and analyzes emerging trends for 2023. Crude oil and natural gas wells drilled horizontally through hydrocarbon-bearing formations are among the most productive wells in the United States. The total number of horizontally drilled wells has increased 88% since 2014. In 2023, 77% of the more than 918,000 U.S. wells produced 15 barrels of oil equivalent per day or less. These wells are mostly older and drilled vertically.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Dec 10, 2024
Global oil production. Growth in oil production next year will come mostly from non-OPEC countries because of ongoing production restraint on the part of OPEC+. At its December 5 meeting, OPEC+ announced that it would delay production increases until April 2025. Those increases had been set to begin in January 2025. We forecast that global oil production will increase by 1.6 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, and we expect almost 90% of that growth will come from countries that do not participate in OPEC+.

Libya Country Analysis Brief

Dec 3, 2024
Despite Libya’s large oil reserves, political conflicts and militia attacks on hydrocarbon infrastructure have limited investments in the country’s oil and natural gas sectors. These challenges have also constrained exploration and development of its reserves since 2011.

Virginia was the top net electricity recipient of any state in 2023 ›

Electricity routinely flows among the Lower 48 states, with almost 10% of U.S. electricity generation traded across state lines. Generation of electricity exceeds its consumption in 25 states, and excess electricity is transmitted across state lines. In 2023, utilities in Virginia brought in the most electricity from other states, with 50.1 million megawatthours (MWh) in net electricity interstate receipts, or 36% of the state’s total electricity supply. Generators in Pennsylvania moved the most electricity outside state borders in 2023, with 83.4 million MWh of power shipped out, or 26% of generation in Pennsylvania. More
