We updated Analyses and Quick Facts for:
Jan 17, 2023 In 2021, Russia was the third-largest energy producer and energy consumer in the world. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States and the European Union enacted a range of sanctions. Many of these sanctions target Russia’s energy exports. In early October 2022, the EU passed its eighth sanctions package, which codified the price cap initiative, and the G7 officially agreed to an initial crude oil price cap of $60/barrel in early December 2022.
Jan 17, 2023 The Drilling Productivity Report has been updated with the latest charts and methodology.
Jan 12, 2023 This site contains spreadsheets with wholesale electricity and natural gas data from eight major trading hubs that cover most regions of the United States. The data are through January 10, 2023 and are republished, with permission, from the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
Jan 10, 2023 U.S. GDP growth. Based on the S&P Global macroeconomic model, we expect U.S. real GDP to grow by 0.5% in 2023, with economic growth returning after contraction in the first quarter of 2023 (1Q23) and 2Q23. In 2024, real GDP grows by 1.9%, driven primarily by an increase in household consumption. Relatively flat economic growth in 2023 results in total U.S. energy consumption falling by 0.9% in our forecast. Total energy consumption then rises by 1.0% in 2024.

Jan 3, 2023 U.S. coal production during the third quarter of 2022 totaled 154.3 million short tons (MMst), which was 5.9% higher than the previous quarter and 4.0% higher than the third quarter of 2021. Third-quarter 2022 U.S. coal exports (20.7 MMst) decreased 9.8% from the second-quarter 2022 level and increased 0.7% from the third-quarter 2021 level. U.S. coal imports in the third quarter of 2022 totaled 2.0 MMst. All data for 2021 and previous years are final. All data for 2022 are preliminary.
Jan 3, 2023 The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for third-quarter 2022 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.
Dec 30, 2022 Imports data at the company level collected from Form EIA-814, Monthly Imports Report.
Dec 30, 2022 According to its U.S. Crude Oil and Natural Gas Proved Reserves, Year-End 2021 report, EIA states that in 2021, proved reserves of crude oil and lease condensate increased by 16%, and proved natural gas reserves increased 32%, setting a new U.S. record for natural gas.
Dec 30, 2022 Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for October 2022. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.
Dec 30, 2022 These monthly production estimates are based on data from Form EIA-914, Monthly Crude Oil, Lease Condensate, and Natural Gas Production Report.
Dec 30, 2022 Supply and disposition of crude oil and petroleum products on a national and regional level. The data describe production, imports and exports, movements, and inventories.
Dec 30, 2022 In October 2022, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 19th consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in October 2022 was 3,116 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 100.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 3.8% (3.7 Bcf/d) higher than October 2021 (96.8 Bcf/d) and the highest level for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from October 2021.
Dec 30, 2022 The U.S. Energy Information Administration release showing national monthly biofuels operable production capacity.
Dec 29, 2022 Our Well Distribution Report presents historical, annual state-level data on the distribution of wells by size and technology and analyzes emerging trends for 2021. Oil and natural gas wells drilled horizontally through hydrocarbon-bearing formations are among the most productive wells in the United States. The total number of horizontally drilled wells has increased over 67% from 2014. In 2021, about 80% of the more than 916,000 U.S. wells produced less than 15 barrels of oil equivalent per day. These wells are mostly older and drilled vertically.
Dec 29, 2022 This site contains spreadsheets with wholesale electricity and natural gas data from eight major trading hubs that cover most regions of the United States. The data are through December 27, 2022, and are republished, with permission, from the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
Dec 22, 2022 This month’s Electricity Monthly Update contains data for October 2022 and a feature article about how Western U.S. hydroelectric generation rose from a 20-year low during the 2021–22 water year.
Dec 22, 2022 The Monthly Energy Review is our comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. According to our December 2022 report, preliminary estimates indicate that total U.S. residential energy consumption equaled 1.4 quadrillion British thermal units in September 2022, a 1% decrease from September 2021.
Dec 22, 2022 Data in the December 2022 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for October 2022, during which net generation in the United States fell 1.5 percent from the October 2021 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 1.9 percent compared to October 2021. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 14.4 percent from the October 2021 level.
As U.S. crude oil and natural gas production have increased, so has the volume of production declines from existing wells. To offset the increasing declines, operators today must bring on new wells to sustain or increase production levels. More ›
