Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jul 11, 2023
U.S. economy. Our forecast assumes U.S. GDP growth of 1.5% in 2023 and 1.3% in 2024, which is revised up from last month’s forecast of 1.3% in 2023 and 1.0% in 2024. The upward revision is partially driven by an updated estimate of real GDP growth in the first quarter of 2023 (1Q23) resulting from more consumer spending and aggregate investment than assumed in last month’s STEO. We use the S&P Global macroeconomic model, and we input our energy price forecasts to get the forecasts for the U.S. economy used in STEO.

Japan Country Analysis Brief

Jul 7, 2023
Japan, the fifth largest consumer of oil in the world, relied on imports to meet 97% of its demand in 2022 as a result of insufficient domestic resources. Because it has no international oil or natural gas pipelines, Japan relies on tanker shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil to meet demand.

We estimate that OPEC members earned about $888 billion in net oil export revenue (in 2022 $) in 2022. OPEC's net revenue rose nearly 43% compared with 2021, when OPEC net oil export revenue totaled an estimated $622 billion (real $). The increase in net export revenue in 2022 was mostly a result of higher crude oil prices and, to a lesser degree, higher petroleum liquids production. OPEC total crude oil output rose to nearly 34.2 million barrels per day (b/d), increasing 2.5 million b/d year on year.

How has U.S. energy use changed since 1776? ›

In 2024, the United States consumed about 94 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) of energy, a 1% increase from 2023, according to our Monthly Energy Review. Fossil fuels—petroleum, natural gas, and coal—accounted for 82% of total U.S. energy consumption in 2024. Nonfossil fuel energy—from renewables and nuclear energy—accounted for the other 18%. Petroleum remained the most-consumed fuel in the United States, as it has been for the past 75 years, and nuclear energy consumption exceeded coal consumption for the first time ever. More
