Natural Gas Monthly

Mar 31, 2021
In January 2021, for the ninth consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2021 was 2,867 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 92.5 Bcf/d. This level was 2.6 Bcf/d (-2.7%) lower than the January 2020 level of 95.1 Bcf/d. Despite this year-over-year decrease, the average daily rate of dry production was the second highest for the month since the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) began tracking monthly dry production in 1973. Gross withdrawals and marketed production of natural gas in January 2021.

2018 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey Consumption Results

Mar 31, 2021

U.S. manufacturing is becoming more fuel-efficient and less labor-intensive since 1998. Manufacturing gross output grew by 12% while fuel consumption decreased by 16%. Labor productivity—measured as gross output divided by the number of employees—also improved by 62% in the same period. In addition, fuel intensity—measured as fuel consumption divided by gross output—decreased by 25% from 3.2 quadrillion British thermal units per billion dollars in 1998 to 2.4 quadrillion British thermal units per billion dollars in 2018.

More information about the 2018 manufacturing consumption data and analysis are available in our data tables and analysis report.

Spent Nuclear Fuel

Mar 30, 2021
EIA released spent nuclear fuel data collected on EIA Form GC-859, Nuclear Fuel Data Survey. The survey collects data from utilities operating commercial, light-water nuclear reactors in the United States and from others possessing irradiated fuel from commercial U.S. nuclear reactors. Data are collected on all discharged nuclear fuel assemblies, nuclear fuel storage capacities and inventories, reactor operating history, other fuel and nonfuel radioactive waste, and low-level waste resulting from decommissioning operations.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Mar 9, 2021
The March Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because responses to COVID-19 continue to evolve. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in energy demand and supply during the past year and will continue to affect these patterns in the future. U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 3.5% in 2020 from 2019 levels. This STEO assumes U.S. GDP will grow by 5.5% in 2021 and by 4.2% in 2022, compared with an assumption of 3.8% in 2021 and 4.2% in 2022 in last month’s STEO. The U.S. macroeconomic assumptions in this outlook are based on forecasts by IHS Markit.
