South Central region follows record net withdrawals with unchanged inventory levels

Mar 5, 2021
Working natural gas stocks in EIA’s South Central storage region reported no net change for the week ending February 26, following a record pull for the previous week, according to EIA’s Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report. Much lower regional temperatures contributed to reduced natural gas demand while recovering natural gas production reversed storage balances that had dipped below the five-year minimum in the South Central Salt region for the first time since December 2018. The South Central region transitioned from record net withdrawals of 158 billion cubic feet (Bcf) during the week ending, February 19, to no net withdrawals just a week later. The South Central region has the nation’s biggest concentration of high deliverability facilities that can withdraw and inject natural gas into underground caverns in large volumes across multiple cycles. This means the region is able to shift from large withdrawals to injections quickly.

Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions at the state level, through 2018

Mar 2, 2021
Last year EIA redesigned the state energy-related carbon dioxide emissions page so that all the tables could publish simultaneously. The analysis report was replaced by a report titled Introduction and Key Concepts: State Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions Tables, which explains the content of the numbered analysis tables. All of the tables include data through 2018 and are based on the State Energy Data System. The state summary tables begin in 1990. Tables for each fuel type and sector and detailed tables for individual state emissions by fuel and sector go back to 1980. This page also includes methodology documentation.

Sustained cold temperatures drive the second largest net withdrawal from working gas stocks in the Lower 48 states

Mar 2, 2021
Working gas operators reported the second-largest weekly net withdrawals for the Lower 48 states following a week characterized by widespread extreme cold throughout most of the country, which increased heating demand for natural gas. Net withdrawals from underground natural gas storage facilities totaled 338 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending February 19, which was 218 Bcf more than the five-year average net withdrawals for the week and only 21 Bcf less than the all-time weekly record withdrawal (359 Bcf reported for the week ending January 5, 2018). As a result, working gas stocks fell lower than the five-year average by 161 Bcf.

Natural Gas Monthly

Feb 26, 2021
In December 2020, for the eighth consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in December 2020 was 2,865 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 92.4 Bcf/d. This level was 4.6 Bcf/d (-4.7%) lower than the December 2019 level of 97.0 Bcf/d. Despite this year-over-year decrease, the average daily rate of dry production was the second highest for the month since the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) began tracking monthly dry production in 1973. Gross withdrawals and marketed production of natural gas in December 2020.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Feb 9, 2021
The February Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because responses to COVID-19 continue to evolve. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in energy demand and supply over the past year and will continue to affect these patterns in the future. U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 3.6% in 2020 from 2019 levels. This STEO assumes U.S. GDP will grow by 3.8% in 2021 and by 4.2% in 2022. The U.S. macroeconomic assumptions in this outlook are based on forecasts by IHS Markit.
