Annual Energy Outlook Retrospective Review

The Annual Energy Outlook Retrospective Review compares realized energy outcomes with the Reference case projections included in previous editions of the Annual Energy Outlook (AEO) beginning with 1994. This edition of the report adds the AEO 2022 projections, updates the historical data to incorporate the latest data revisions, and includes measures for six sources of electricity generation: solar, wind, conventional hydroelectric, coal, natural gas, and nuclear.

The Brent crude oil spot price in our forecast averages $98 per barrel (b) in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22) and $97/b in 2023. The possibility of petroleum supply disruptions and slower-than-expected crude oil production growth continues to create the potential for higher oil prices, while the possibility of slower-than-forecast economic growth creates the potential for lower prices.

Additionally, files containing updated federal and state motor fuel and aviation fuel tax information are available on the PMM webpage.
- June 2022 crude oil sales data are available in tables 1, 1A, and 18-27. However, due to systems issues, publication of June 2022 refined petroleum products sales data are delayed. We are working to restore our systems as soon as possible.

Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity

This annual report calculates underground natural gas storage capacity as of November 2021 and explains how changes in storage capacity relate to market circumstances. Natural gas storage capacity declined in 2021 compared with 2020, by about 1%, according to bot metrics used to assess working natural gas storage capacity: design capacity and demonstrated peak capacity.
U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for June 2022. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

In June 2022, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 15th consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in June 2022 was 2,930 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 97.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 4.4 Bcf/d (4.8%) higher than June 2021 (93.2 Bcf/d) and the highest level for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from June 2021.

Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 5.4 percent compared to June 2021. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 11.3 percent from the June 2021 level.

OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

We estimate that OPEC members earned about $566 billion in net oil export revenue (in 2021 dollars) in 2021. OPEC’s 2021 net revenue is a 76% increase from 2020, when OPEC net oil export revenue totaled an estimated $322 billion, which was the lowest revenue since 2003. The increase in net export revenue in 2021 can be attributed to a combination of increased OPEC production and higher crude oil prices during the year.
