2020 refill season posts strong natural gas injections during first two months

Jun 10, 2020
The 2020 natural gas storage refill season (April 1–October 31) has started out strong, lagging behind only 2019 and 2015 for total net injections for the Lower 48 states through May. Net injections into working natural gas totaled 102 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending May 29, 2020. Net injections into working gas exceeded 100 Bcf in four out of the past six weeks, compared with 2019, when net injections into working gas exceeded 100 Bcf in five out of six weeks for a similar time frame. No other refill season recorded more than three triple-digit net injections at this point in the refill season.

Average wholesale electricity prices were 40% lower in New England during winter 2019–20

Jun 10, 2020
The average spot (wholesale) price of electricity in New England for winter 2019–20 (November 1, 2019–March 31, 2020) was about $28 per megawatthour (MWh), down about 40% from the average price of electricity of $47/MWh for the winter of 2018–19. This price reduction was calculated using Internal Hub prices generated by the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE)—a proxy for the average system prices for wholesale electricity in New England. Low natural gas prices, warmer-than-normal temperatures, lower loads, and reduced needs to run expensive generators contributed to lower average winter electricity prices in New England.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jun 9, 2020
Although revisions to EIA’s forecasts in the June STEO are generally smaller than they have been in recent months, this forecast remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because mitigation and reopening efforts related to the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continue to evolve. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in energy supply and demand patterns in 2020, particularly for petroleum and other liquid fuels. Uncertainties persist across EIA’s outlook for other energy sources, including natural gas, electricity, coal, and renewables.

These data are not a forecast and represent last-known public information on projects. This spreadsheet will be updated twice a year.

Natural gas storage capacity remains relatively unchanged in 2019

Jun 3, 2020
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) two metrics for assessing 2019 underground working natural gas storage capacity in the Lower 48 states compared with the previous year show mixed results: one metric reported a small increase and the other a small decrease. EIA measures working natural gas storage capacity in two ways: design capacity and demonstrated peak capacity. In 2019, EIA estimates that maximum working natural gas storage capacity measured by design capacity was 4,693 billion cubic feet (Bcf) and was 4,261 Bcf measured by demonstrated peak capacity.
