Distributed Generation, Battery Storage, and Combined Heat and Power System Characteristics and Costs in the Buildings and Industrial Sectors
May 5, 2020
Distributed generation refers to onsite, behind-the-meter generation of energy. This often includes electricity from renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaics and small wind turbines, but it can also include electricity and captured waste heat from combined heat and power (CHP) systems in the buildings and industrial sectors. EIA works with technology experts to project distributed generation and CHP equipment cost and performance characteristics. Always available by request, these reports help EIA increase transparency for some of the most important assumptions used for Annual Energy Outlook building energy generation projections.
Northeast Regional Energy Efficiency Program and Measure Data
May 4, 2020
Energy efficiency (EE) incentives offered by electric and natural gas utilities and state EE organizations are an important component of evolving state and local EE policies. To inform EIA’s assumptions for its Annual Energy Outlook, EIA contracted with the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) to update its Regional Energy Efficiency Database (REED) and to collect detailed measure-level information on EE program incentives from selected utilities. The report focuses on utilities and state EE organizations in states that were not featured in NEEP’s previous FY 2018 report.

Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector
Apr 13, 2020
In 2008, EIA began collecting the commodity cost of all coal delivered to power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 50 megawatts or greater on Form EIA-923, Power Plant Operations Report. Because EIA already collected delivered cost for the same shipments, a proxy for transportation cost is calculated by subtracting one from the other. The owners or operators of all applicable plants are required to provide EIA with the quantity (in tons), commodity cost, and total delivered cost (both in cents per million British thermal units) of all coal shipments by fuel supplier and by month. This recent update incorporates final EIA-923 data for 2018 and preliminary data for 2019.”
