EIA forecasts that average U.S. household expenditures for most major home heating fuels will be higher this winter compared with last winter. Average increases vary by fuel; natural gas expenditures are forecast to rise by 5%, home heating oil by 20%, and electricity by 3%, while propane expenditures are forecast to remain similar to last year. Most of the increase reflects higher forecast energy prices. U.S. average heating degree days are expected to be 1% higher than last winter. However, realized expenditures are highly dependent on actual weather outcomes (Winter Fuels Outlook).

Quarterly coal distribution data for all years are preliminary and will be superseded by the release of the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.

U.S. coal production during second-quarter 2018 totaled 180.8 million short tons. This level was 3.7% lower than the previous quarter and 3.4% lower than second-quarter 2017. Second-quarter 2018 U.S. coal exports (30.9 million short tons) increased 13.4% from the first-quarter 2018 level and increased 41.7% from the second-quarter 2017 level. U.S. coal imports in second-quarter 2018 totaled 1.5 million short tons. All data for 2017 and prior years are final. All data for 2018 are preliminary.

Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 14.0 percent compared to July 2017. The average residential retail price of electricity for July 2018 was up 0.1 percent from what it had been in July 2017.

Preliminary data indicate that U.S. total primary energy consumption was 50 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in the first six months of 2018, a 4% increase from the same period in 2017. U.S. total primary energy production was 46 quadrillion Btu in the first six months of 2018, an 8% increase from the same period in 2017.

U.S. Energy Information Administration releases its online analysis of 2017 energy-related carbon dioxide emissions today. It indicates U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels were 5,142 million metric tons carbon dioxide in 2017, a decrease of 0.9 percent from the 2016 level. Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have declined in seven of the last ten years. This analysis is based on data contained in the August 2018 Monthly Energy Review.

U.S. wholesale natural gas spot prices fell to record lows in first half 2024 ›

The average monthly wholesale spot natural gas price at the U.S. benchmark Henry Hub fell by 20% to $2.56 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) between January and June of this year, according to data from Refinitiv Eikon. In January, the Henry Hub price averaged $3.18/MMBtu, then dropped to $1.49/MMBtu in March, marking the lowest average monthly inflation-adjusted price since at least 1997. In addition, prices from February through April 2024 were the lowest ever recorded for these months. More
