Effects of Liquefied Natural Gas Exports on the U.S. Natural Gas Market

May 23, 2023
EIA presents an alternative case to the Annual Energy Outlook 2023 (AEO2023) that assumes no new interstate natural gas pipelines are built between 2024 and 2050. This Issues in Focus article examines how these limitations to natural gas pipeline capacity affect natural gas production, consumption, prices, and trade at the national and regional levels.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

May 9, 2023
Weather forecast. Beginning with the May 2023 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), our STEO model will combine a 30-year trendline and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s forecast to create our weather forecasts. This methodology change will result in warmer forecast weather in the United States in both the winter and in the summer. The change will involve a one-time shift that will decrease our heating degree day (HDD) forcast in 2023 by 1% and in 2024 by 4%, and increase our cooling degree day (CDD) forecast by 8% in 2023 and by 12% in 2024. The shift will affect some series that use weather as an independent variable.

In February 2023, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 23rd consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in February 2023 was 2,842 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 101.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 7.4% (7.0 Bcf/d) higher than February 2022 (94.5 Bcf/d) and the highest level for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from February 2022.

Nigeria Country Analysis Brief

Apr 26, 2023
Nigeria is a major hydrocarbons producer in Africa and its production is the mainstay of the country's economy. Oil and natural gas revenue is the country’s primary source of foreign exchange, and crude oil price changes noticeably affect its economy. Since 2020, unplanned disruptions and less investment in upstream development led to a significant decline in crude oil production. in third-quarter 2022, Nigeria’s crude oil production briefly dropped below one million barrels per day (b/d) because of significant and extended disruptions stemming from crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
