South Korea Country Analysis Brief

Apr 13, 2023
South Korea was the world’s eighth-largest energy consumer in 2021. It relies on imports to meet almost 98% of its fossil fuel consumption as a result of insufficient domestic resources. Because it has no international oil or natural gas pipelines, South Korea relies on tanker shipments of liquefied natural gas and crude oil to meet demand.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Apr 11, 2023
Global liquid fuels production. On April 3, OPEC and partner countries announced they would cut crude oil production by 1.2 million barrels per day (b/d) through the end of 2023. Our March STEO accounted for some declines in OPEC production in the coming months. However, as a result of the announcement, we reduced our forecast of OPEC production by 0.5 million b/d for the rest of 2023. Overall, we expect less global liquid fuels production this year than in last month’s STEO. However, less production from OPEC was partly offset by a 0.3 million b/d increase in our forecast for Russia’s liquid fuels production over the rest of this year.

Quarterly Coal Report (QCR)—Fourth-Quarter 2022

Apr 3, 2023

U.S. coal production during the fourth quarter of 2022 totaled 145.7 million short tons (MMst), which was 5.6% lower than the previous quarter and 0.5% lower than the fourth quarter of 2021. Fourth-quarter 2022 U.S. coal exports (20.8 MMst) increased 0.5% from the third-quarter 2022 level and decreased 4.2% from the fourth-quarter 2021 level. U.S. coal imports in the fourth quarter of 2022 totaled 1.4 MMst.

All data for 2021 and previous years are final. All data for 2022 are preliminary.

The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for fourth-quarter 2022 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.

Petroleum Marketing Monthly

Apr 3, 2023

The April 2023 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through January 2023 presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined petroleum products sales in the United States.

January 2023 crude oil sales data are available in tables 1, 1A, and 18—27. However, publication of refined petroleum products sales data continue to be delayed.

Mexico Country Analysis Brief

Mar 31, 2023
Pemex (Mexico’s state-owned oil company) reported a profit of 23 billion pesos (US $1.2 billion) in 2022 aided by higher oil prices. This is the first time the company posted a profit in a decade on an annual basis. Recently, increasing private investment and rising condensate production helped reverse a downward trend in Mexico’s oil production that began in 2004. In 2022, Mexico’s oil production was nearly 2 million barrels per day (b/d).

Natural Gas Monthly

Mar 31, 2023
In January 2023, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 22nd consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2023 was 3,145 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 101.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 6.5% (6.2 Bcf/d) higher than January 2022 (95.3 Bcf/d) and the highest level for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from January 2022.

Angola Country Analysis Brief

Mar 29, 2023
Angola is the second-largest total liquid fuels producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, after Nigeria, based on annual 2021 production levels. Angola's economy is largely based on hydrocarbon production, making it vulnerable to crude oil price swings. Angola’s total liquid fuels production has been declining over the past decade, which is a result of a lack of investment in upstream development. However, higher oil prices over the past three years have benefited the Angolan economy, which exited a five-year recession in 2021 because of higher revenues derived from its hydrocarbon production.

2020 RECS Consumption and Expenditures Data: 2020 RECS consumption and expenditures tables are now available

Our first set of consumption and expenditures tables are now available. This release features, for the first time ever, household consumption and expenditures estimates for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The 18 tables in this release include total consumption, total expenditures, and energy-intensity estimates for electricity, natural gas, propane, and fuel oil.

Additional tables with estimates of energy consumption and expenditures by end use (for example, air conditioning and water heating); a final public-use microdata file containing consumption, expenditures, and end-use data; and additional documentation will be released in June 2023.

Qatar Country Analysis Brief

Mar 28, 2023
Qatar produced the world’s sixth-highest amount of dry natural gas, exported the second-highest amount of liquefied natural gas, and held the third-highest amount of natural gas reserves in 2021. Qatar’s high natural gas output yields significant and valuable petroleum liquid byproducts such as lease condensates and hydrocarbon gas plant liquids (HGLs). Two large natural gas production and liquefaction projects in the country are under development and slated to come online starting in 2025.
