Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

This recent update to the Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector web page incorporates final Form EIA-923 data for 2021 and updates the tables with data in nominal and real 2022 dollars. In 2008, EIA began collecting the commodity cost of all coal delivered to power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 50 megawatts or greater on Form EIA-923, Power Plant Operations Report. Because we already collect delivered cost for the same shipments, we calculate a proxy for transportation cost by subtracting the commodity cost from the delivered cost. On Form EIA-923, the owners or operators of all applicable plants must provide the quantity (in tons), commodity cost, and total delivered cost (both in cents per million British thermal units) of all coal shipments by fuel supplier and by month.

Natural gas prices. We forecast that the Henry Hub natural gas spot price will average $3.40 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2023, down almost 50% from last year and about 30% from our January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) forecast. We revised our outlook for Henry Hub prices as a result of significantly warmer-than-normal weather in January that led to less-than-normal consumption of natural gas for space heating and pushed inventories above the five-year average.

In November 2022, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 20th consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in November 2022 was 3,023 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 100.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 3.1% (3.1 Bcf/d) higher than November 2021 (97.7 Bcf/d) and the highest level for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from November 2021
U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for November 2022. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

Data in the January 2023 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for November 2022, during which net generation in the United States rose 2.8 percent from the November 2021 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 4.2 percent compared to November 2021. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 11.2 percent from the November 2021 level.
