Annual Energy Outlook 2022: Extended and Sunset Tax Credit Cases

Jul 13, 2022
This Issues in Focus article presents two cases related to the availability of select tax credits and federal efficiency incentives. We analyze how extending tax credits for renewable energy and combined-heat-and-power technologies or ending the credits by 2023 could affect long-term renewable and distributed generation deployment and the mix of resources used for electricity generation. We also explore how changing the timespan of available energy efficiency incentives affects end-use demand for energy, electricity prices, equipment stocks, and building shell efficiencies over time.

Canada Country Analysis Brief

Jul 12, 2022
Canada is a net exporter of most energy commodities and is a significant producer of natural gas, hydroelectricity, and crude oil and other liquids. Most of Canada’s energy exports are destined for the United States. In 2021, energy consumption in Canada, which totaled 13 quadrillion British thermal units (quads), accounted for less than 3% of total world energy consumption. Canada’s domestic consumption of energy largely consists of oil, natural gas, and hydroelectricity.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jul 12, 2022
The July Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is subject to heightened uncertainty resulting from a variety of factors, including Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The possibility of economic activity being less robust than assumed in our forecast could result in lower-than-forecast energy consumption. Factors driving uncertainty about energy supply include how sanctions affect Russia’s oil production, the production decisions of OPEC+, and the rate at which U.S. oil and natural gas production rises.

Natural Gas Monthly

This level was 2.7 Bcf/d (2.9%) higher than April 2021 (93.2 Bcf/d) and the highest level for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from April 2021.
